The Art of Quilt Making Jaipuri Quilts are unique because they are handmade with age-old techniques of voile making, carding and quilting. Selecting Best Fabric The upper-most layer of quilts is made of cotton fabric. Selecting the ideal fabric is quite complex because the number of fabrics required is based on the desired pattern. Several quilters use fabrics from home and incorporate fabrics with specific sentimental value. Preparation of Fabric The newly-bought fabric is washed before sewing and cutting. If fabric is not washed, the dye is more likely to bleed while washing later. Several fabric makers have considered it and took steps to avoid color bleeding. The fabric should be ironed flat before cutting to avoid wrinkles and creases. Carding This is a very important procedure to get the cotton ready to be used as filling in quilts. For this purpose, two carders and deployed. The convex paddles are connected with small teeth and the fibers are placed over the carders. On the other side, the other is drawn over the face of first one several times. The carder’s position is altered between vertical and horizontal in order to eliminate dross from cotton. Once carding is done, only fine and soft fibers stay behind and this process takes a whole week. Cotton Voile The layering is done when cotton is evenly distributed across the quilt or it will be lumpy at some points when other parts are likely to sag. The velvet cover can be used instead of cotton voile. Quilting It is the last stage in which quilts are stitched along. These days, sewing machines are used to increase convenience, efficiency and durability of quilt. Artisans have been engaged in such projects from two to three generations.
